The Value of Maternity Coaching

As a mum of two, I have navigated and at times still navigating the challenges of the dual roles that parents hold.

Pregnant mum and small child

Coaching was a game changer for me, and I was lucky to have two incredible managers before and after my first child 18 years ago that ensured I had access to this. This helped me prepare for maternity leave and ensured I was prepared for this new reality. As I write this, it feels sad to write “lucky” as luck should not have anything to do with it, but certainly at that time it was unusual to be so well supported. Lots of my peers were having children at the same time and sadly many did not have such a supportive organisational experience. As a coach, I see many parents that are navigating this juncture and have thought carefully about the best way to support this through two dedicated coaching programmes:

  • Navigating the journey from Bump to Beyond

  • Supporting new dads every step of the way

Maternity Coaching provides essential support to women navigating the complex transition of becoming a mother while balancing professional responsibilities. This phase often brings significant physical, emotional and career related challenges. Maternity coaching helps address these by offering personalised guidance tailored to each woman’s unique circumstances. Navigating the journey from Bump to Beyond provides the following:

  • Emotional and Psychological Support – helps women manage the emotional challenges that come with pregnancy, childbirth and returning to work. It offers tools and strategies to deal with anxiety, stress and the identity shift that many women experience as they move between their roles as mothers and professionals.

  • Career Continuity and Growth – assist women in planning their career trajectory during and after maternity leave. It helps to strategize their return to work, ensuring that they remain engaged and motivated in their careers. This coaching also supports in advocating for their needs, such as flexible work arrangements, which can be crucial for maintaining work life balance.

  • Work Life Balance – The transition to motherhood can disrupt the balance between personal and professional life. Maternity coaching provides practical advice on time management prioritization, setting boundaries, enabling women to navigate their new roles without compromising career ambitions.

  • Builds confidence and resilience – it empowers women by building their confidence to handle both motherhood and their professional roles. It equips them with the resilience to manage the dual demands of work and family life, helping to feel more control during this significant change.

Paternity Coaching helps new dads navigate the challenges of fatherhood by offering personalised guidance tailored to their unique circumstances. It provides the following:

  • Emotional and Psychological Support – Helps new dads manage the emotional challenges that come with becoming a parent and balancing work responsibilities. It offers tools and strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, and the identity shift that many men experience as they take on the dual roles of father and professional.

  • Career Continuity and Growth – Assists dads in planning their career trajectory during and after the arrival of a new child. It helps strategize their return to work, ensuring they remain engaged and motivated in their careers. This coaching also supports advocating for their needs, such as flexible work arrangements, which can be crucial for maintaining work-life balance.

  • Work-Life Balance – The transition to fatherhood can disrupt the balance between personal and professional life. Paternity coaching provides practical advice on time management, prioritisation, and setting boundaries, enabling dads to navigate their new roles without compromising career ambitions.

  • Building Confidence and Resilience – Empowers dads by building their confidence to handle both fatherhood and their professional roles. It equips them with the resilience to manage the dual demands of work and family life, helping them feel more in control during this significant life change.

Maternity and Paternity coaching is an investment in employee wellbeing and retention. It helps retain valuable talent by making the transition smoother and reducing the likelihood of parents leaving the workforce due to maternity/paternity related challenges. This fosters an inclusive and supportive working environment, which in turns drives up engagement and organisational success.
